The Second Galactic War

The efforts of Helldivers across the galaxy are all that keeps the enemy from Liberty's doorstep.

The Galactic War is a series of conflicts waged by the Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth Federation on several fronts throughout the galaxy. Two such conflicts have occurred.

Overview

The Galactic War in both Helldivers 1 and Helldivers 2 serves as the primary means of narrative delivery.

In Helldivers 1, the Galactic War lasts for 20-30 days before resetting, ending if Super Earth is captured or if The Helldivers successfully eliminate all 3 enemy factions.

In Helldivers 2, the Galactic War is persistent and continuously evolving throughout the years. It is unknown if it will ever be reset.

The First Galactic War

First Galactic War enemy factions
The enemies of Super Earth

In the years 2044 to 2084, Super Earth found itself encircled and threatened by three distinct and hostile factions: the insect-like Bugs, the mechanically augmented Cyborgs, and the enigmatic Illuminates. The government of Super Earth, advocating for the need to suppress these foes to safeguard its citizens' freedoms and way of life, assigned the Helldivers – a specialized combat force – for missions beyond mere warfare.

Following the conflict:

The Bugs were forced into E-710 farms, the Cyborgs enslaved and forced to work the mines of Cyberstan[1], and the Illuminate forced to surrender all their technology before being almost completely exterminated[2].

Fate of the Illuminate

Everyone knows the Illuminate were wiped out after the First Galactic War. The official records state it very clearly: they say "at the end of the war, the Illuminate were absolutely, 100% destroyed." How can something survive being 100% destroyed?

Ship Master

History matters! At the end of the First Galactic War, we magnanimously allowed the Illuminate to flee the Galaxy. Now they're back. Why? Because they hate peace.

Ship PA system

After the end of the First Galactic War, Super Earth forced the Illuminate to surrender their technology before eradicating their civilization. Unknown to Super Earth, a small portion survived this extermination and fled into unknown space, outside of the Federation's detection.

After their eventual return, the official public story became that following the end of the First Galactic War, Illuminate refugees were allowed to flee into intergalactic space.

The Great Democratization

The Great Democratization
The Great Democratization

For 100 years, our colonists have toiled happily to enshrine the unquestionable rule of freedom. But now, our enemies rise from the shadows once more. The tyrannical Terminid spread unfettered across the Galaxy. The socialist automatons terrorize innocent families. Babies are torn from their mothers. Voters from their ballots. In this time of need, Super Earth once again calls upon her mightiest, bravest, most obedient heroes... The Helldivers.

Helldivers 2 "The Story So Far" video

The First Galactic War ended with Super Earth having emerged victorious against its adversaries. With its foes vanquished and the Galactic War won, a century of peace and prosperity ensued. The Helldivers, Super Earth’s elite task force, were dismissed. The remaining Cyborgs were all captured and forced to work in the mines of their homeworld, Cyberstan, the Bugs were put into farms for production of Element-710, and the Illuminate were exterminated.

Faster-than-light (FTL) travel technology, liberated from the Illuminates, gave Super Earth access to the galaxy and has since been used to colonize it (Which contradicts the first game, as it states the Alcubierre Drive was invented in the 2030s, well before the start of the First Galactic War).

This period has come to be known as "The Great Democratization"[3] and lasted for about one hundred years.

The Second Galactic War

Beginning on or around 2184, the Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth Federation initiated a series of escalating special military operations which would ultimately culminate in the declaration of war on all "agents of Tyranny".

Initially, descendants of the Bugs known as Terminid icon.png Terminids breached their enclosures, rapidly reproducing and spreading through the eastern sectors. Shortly after, a new yet vaguely familiar enemy emerged on the south-western sectors: the Automaton icon.png Automaton Legion. With two enemy armies threatening galactic peace, Super Earth mobilized The Helldivers on February 8th, 2184.

Much later, on December 12th 2184, a third enemy faction joined the war: Illuminate icon.png The Illuminate.

Details of every major order in the game can be found on the Major Orders page. All battles from the Second Galactic War are present on the Battle Tracker. Mechanics governing the war can be found on the Second Galactic War Mechanics page.

February 2184

Galactic Frontier February 2024

In response to the Terminid icon.png Terminids escape from their farm enclosures in the eastern sectors, scientists of the Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth Federation started developing the Terminid Control System (TCS), a planet-wide bug extermination network. The TCS was scheduled to be built on the Barrier Planets of the Umlaut Sector, quarantining the bugs behind them and stopping their spread throughout the galaxy. The Helldivers were deployed to aid in the fight against the Terminids, marking the start of Operation Valiant Enclosure; simultaneously, a robotic race know as the Automaton icon.png Automatons emerged. For the operation's first phase, the Helldivers were ordered to liberate planets of Heeth and Angel's Venture; an endeavor in which they succeeded, pushing the front towards the Barrier Planets.

Meanwhile the Automatons launched a surprise attack against multiple highly populated Super Earth planets in the Trigon and Xzar sectors. Super Earth Armed Forces in the region were overrun and the Helldivers were redirected to the western front for aid. However, the Helldivers could not stop the Automaton push, which resulted in the bots gaining significant ground in these sectors.

The sudden emergence of the Automatons disrupted Helldiver efforts as a previously undetected subterranean hive in the planet of Veld allowed an outbreak of Terminids to advance back into the Orion Sector. The outbreak was successfully contained, but not before it could spread into nearby planets.

March 2184

Following the success of the previous Major Order, Heeth, Angel's Venture and nearby planets suffered multiple Terminid outbreaks. Thanks to swift Helldiver deployment, the bug outbreak was contained, keeping the front on the Barrier Planets. Meanwhile, the Morgunson factories on Tien Kwan were finishing production of a new and improved line of Exosuits, which would soon aid in battlefields across the galaxy [4].

The factories would halt production[5] as forces from the Automaton icon.png Automaton Legion invaded Tien Kwan overnight. Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth High Command issued orders[6] to prevent the technology from falling into the bots' hands, and the planet was swiftly liberated. Thanks to this, production of the EXO-45 Patriot Exosuits concluded and were distributed fleet-wide[7].

After many days of work, SEAF engineers finalized construction of the Terminid Control System (TCS) over the Barrier Planets in the Umlaut Sector. However, surges[8] in bug activity forced the engineers to evacuate before activation. The Helldivers were deployed and successfully activated the TCS towers, dispersing Termicide across the Barrier Planets and culling millions of Terminids.

With the successful activation of the TCS, High Command ordered the harvesting of Terminids for E-710 within the newly established Quarantine Zone behind the Barrier Planets. This coincided with the official surfacing of a new - never seen before[9] - type of bug: the Shrieker[10]. The Helldivers managed to liberate Fori Prime, but were unable to liberate Zagon Prime, and thus failing the Major Order.

This failure did not stop Super Earth from harvesting more E-710, as Civilian Biomass Collection Teams (BCTs) were deployed on the Draco Sector and Hellmire. With Helldiver assistance, the BCTs extracted vast amounts of crude solid E-710 and the planets were left behind to allow the Terminids to repopulate—under careful supervision.

Following interrogations on captured Automatons, Super Earth learned that they were planning a massive invasion of unprecedented scale: The Reclamation. Given the alarming news, High Command authorized Operation Swift Disassembly[11] with the objective to eradicate the Automatons entirely. The operation was divided into many phases, the first of which - Disrupt Communications - tasked the Helldivers with capturing the long-range communications array located on Troost. By pushing deep into the Trigon Sector, the array was successfully captured. It was discovered that the Automatons were using it to broadcast outside the Galactic Frontier; further details would be hard to acquire as much of its data was already deleted. Another piece of intel discovered were transmissions of the blueprints for a new Automaton type: aerial Gunships.

The second phase of Operation Swift Disassembly took place in the Severin Sector, where the biggest known Automaton production center was located on the planet Tibit. Despite Helldiver efforts, the Automatons retained Tibit, and its manufacturing facilities. Intercepted bot chatter following this failure hinted on an upcoming counteroffensive.

Before proceeding with the next phase of Operation Swift Disassembly, Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth High Command turned its attention towards the infamous Malevelon Creek. The planet had become a great source of community-made lore and memes[12]. This was only intensified when it was revealed that the Automaton icon.png Automaton Legion was rapidly depleting the planet's exceptionally rich rhodium deposits. Orders to liberate the planet were issued, and within mere hours the planet was back under Super Earth control[13]. A few days later, on April 3rd, 2024, the president of Super Earth decreed the date as Malevelon Creek Memorial Day in honor of those lost during the battles that occurred on the planet; commemorative capes were issued shortly after[14].

The Automatons put their remaining resources into a large-scale counterattack, targeting Ubanea, Draupnir and the recently freed Malevelon Creek. Deployment of the previously-discovered Gunships[15] began in full; extremely rare sightings of Factory Striders were also reported during the attacks. Following orders, the offensive was successfully beaten back and the Helldivers proceeded into the final phase of the operation: annihilation.

Despite the heavy losses, Automaton messages still included references to The Reclamation. Thus High Command immediately authorized the fourth and final phase of the operation: the complete eradication of the Automatons. The orders involved the capture of their three remaining planets: Tibit, Maia and Durgen. After days of fighting, on April 7th, 2184, The Helldivers successfully exterminated the Automaton presence from the galactic map and the threat posed by The Reclamation was considered fully ended. This achievement, coupled with the containment of the Terminid icon.png Terminid Horde behind the Terminid Control System (TCS), was cause for celebration across the federation[16]. As reward for their services, Helldivers were awarded an extra 1 (one) minute break[17].

With the Automatons eradicated and Terminids contained, peace had returned to the federation. Super Earth started work on new and improved E-710 farms in order to secure the prosperity of its citizens. The planets of Hellmire, Estanu and Crimsica were cleared of bug presence and construction of the Terminid Enrichment & Extraction Centers began.

The peace was short lived, however, as the federation entered LIBCON 1[18]; A massive Automaton Invasion Fleet, comprising tens of thousands of warships, arrived from FTL jump to the Valdis Sector and overran every planet in just hours. The Reclamation had begun. The Automatons exterminated in Operation Swift Disassembly were merely a vanguard force, this was the bots' true force. Helldivers and SEAF scrambled to halt their advance. In response to the threat, High Command also authorized deployment of Super Destroyer Fleet Upgrades; level 4 Modules were made available for requisition on all Super Destroyers[19]. Despite their best efforts, the Helldivers were unable to halt the Automaton push. The entirety of the Lacaille Sector fell, as well as portions of the Hydra and Andromeda sectors.

With the loss of many worlds, Super Earth ordered the establishment of the Menkent Line as a means to stabilize the front. The planets of Menkent and Lesath were successfully taken back, and rudimentary orbital defenses had been established along the line by SEAF and civilian laborers. Additionally, a SEAF Forward Command Base on Vernen Wells was created, providing fresh recruits and supplies to the front.

The Automaton Fleet had been forced to divert their plans. Rather than advancing through the newly-estabilished Menkent Line, the bots would attempt to flank it via the planet Marfark. In order to bolster their new advance, full deployment of the finalized Factory Striders began[20]. Despite this, the Helldivers were successful and halted their new push.

The western front had stabilized, but the rapid mobilization of troops had exhausted Super Earth's reserves of Element-710. As such, to fuel a counteroffensive the Helldivers were ordered to manually produce Terminid corpses for conversion into more E-710. In mere hours[21] the Helldivers achieved the target goal of 2 billion Terminid kills, which was far faster (due to an in-game error[22]) than anticipated. This surplus of fuel enabled the transport of weapons, equipment, and personnel to the frontlines of the Automaton fight.

Shortly after, both Terminids and Automatons launched large-scale assaults. The Helldivers were tasked with defending two fronts at once. Heavy loses were suffered on the Automaton front, as the entirety of the Andromeda Sector fell, the bots breached into the Ymir and Trigon sectors, and the Menkent Line immediately collapsed against the first attack since it was established (which led to many community memes[23]). Meanwhile, the Terminid front held with minimal losses. Despite the collapse of the western front, the Major Order would ultimately be considered a success.

After receiving intel of trapped survivors (and useful weaponry) on both Choohe and Penta, Super Earth High Command authorized the beginning of a new multi-phase operation: Operation Legitimate Undertaking. Its first phase, citizen rescue, tasked the Helldivers with liberating one of these planets as only the first liberated planet would likely contain survivors and intact weaponry[24]. Penta was liberated and distribution of RL-77 Airburst Rocket Launchers began fleet-wide[25]. Choohe, and the Anti-Tank Mines within, would remain unliberated. Despite the wording of the Major Order asking to make a choice between the planets, it would ultimately be deemed a failure, as the task listed to liberate both.

Operation Legitimate Undertaking was placed on indefinite hiatus as catastrophe struck: the TCS failed[26]. Non-lethal doses of Termicide eventually caused beneficial changes to Terminid gene expression, which led to outbreaks in all Barrier Planets of the Umlaut Sector. The situation was far worse in Meridia, where Terminid reproduction rates exploded overnight, and continued to increase exponentially. The planet became completely infested and had been classified as a Supercolony. Conventional Helldiver operations on the planet would be ineffective, and as such it was made inaccessible. In order to prevent further disaster, The Helldivers would successfully deactivate the TCS towers in Erata Prime, Fenrir III and Turing, sparing these planets from suffering Meridia's fate. With the TCS inoperable and the Supercolony active, the Terminids were a greater threat than ever before.

The collapse of the Supercolony
The collapse of the Supercolony

The Supercolony of Meridia proved to be an immediate threat to Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth; the spores emitted by the Supercolony rapidly caused numerous outbreaks within nearby planets. Containment of these outbreaks was top-priority. The Terminid icon.png Terminid presence would be purged out of the Orion Sector by The Helldivers, but failure to contain the infestation on Acamar IV led to the failure of the Major Order. Evacuation orders were issued for all nearby planets as the Ministry of Science worked on a way to combat the Supercolony.

Following the loss of the MD-17 Anti-Tank Mines on Choohe to the Automaton icon.png Automatons - and the civilians too - production began elsewhere immediately. However, output was restricted due to shortages of necessary materials. As such High Command ordered the Helldivers to decommission 2 billion bots; their scrapped frames would be utilized in the mines' production. Despite their efforts, the quota was not met. The production of the Anti-Tank mines would be delayed again.

The huge territorial gains of the Automatons, the failure of the TCS and the continuous threat of the Supercolony forced Super Earth's government to officially declare war on "all agents of Tyranny". All actions before this were now considered "special military operations". With the official declaration of the Second Galactic War, enlistment rates soared and the construction of massive new training facilities begun on a small number of lightly-populated planets. Namely, the planets of Aesir Pass, Vernen Wells, Heeth and Angel's Venture would be successfully held in order to construct such facilities. Thanks to this, SEAF support to planetary liberation would be augmented by a steady flow of new recruits, boosting liberation rates while the training camps held.

With war declared, High Command would make efforts to boost citizen morale by ordering the cullion of billions of Super Earth's enemies. This plan would fail, as Helldiver efforts could not reach the objectives established by High Command. Despite this, the citizens of Super Earth would continue to support the war effort. The SEAF training camp in Vernen Wells would fall during this Major Order.

Surveillance satellite "Security" acquired imagery of a massive Automaton factory on the planet Varylia 5. Analysis would determine the massive "Petafactory" to be similar in structure to the Morgunson Arsenal's own in Tien Kwan. Seeking to deny the enemy asset and to also retrofit the complex for their own ends[27], Super Earth ordered the Helldivers to liberate the planet. They would succeed while simultaneously defending the training facilities in Angel's Venture from a sudden Termind outbreak originated from the Supercolony. The Petafactory was then repurposed to produce EXO-49 Emancipator Exosuits, which were immediatelly distributed fleet-wide[28].

The time to address the Meridian Supercolony had come. Super Earth scientists on Moradesh discovered a solution to permanently end the Supercolony's threat via the weaponization of Dark Fluid. This synthetic exotic matter - liberated from Illuminate icon.png The Illuminate at the end of the First Galactic War - would implode the planet into a Singularity when deployed. Thus began Operation Enduring Peace, with its first phase tasking the Helldivers with securing a pathway between the Moradesh Research Facility and Meridia. The SEAF training facilities in Heeth came under attack, but were swiftly defended. Meanwhile, an incident at the Moradesh Research Facility caused small delays in the weaponization of Dark Fluid payloads, but production resumed shortly after. With Fenrir III, Angel's Venture and Turing secured, the pathway was formed and the operation proceeded into its final phase.

Phase 2 of the operation, the destruction of Supercolony, began immediately after. The Moradesh Research Facility's high output could not be maintained for long, even with safety and sleep protocols optimized for productivity, as such speed was crucial for success. It would take several days of fighting as Helldivers were deployed to the planet and met with fierce resistance[29]. Despite the extremely adverse odds, the Helldivers were successful. The Dark Fluid payloads accrued into critical mass and the Meridian Supercolony imploded into a Orb.svg Black Hole[30]. In order to protect the Super Destroyers deployed around Meridia, emergency FTL jumps to Super Earth were made by the ships' crews. As thanks for the Helldivers' cooperation with the jump, 30 seconds were awarded to be used on one sleep cycle[31]. The Moradesh Research Facility was decommissioned following the total exhaustion of all Dark Fluid stores. The scientists who contributed to the "Moradesh Project" were awarded the Super Citizenship Medal of Freedom.

With the Supercolony destroyed, Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth turned its attention to the the worlds infested because of its presence, while their chemists began work on an improved Termicide 2.0. High Command ordered the liberation of the planets within the Umlaut and Jin Xi sectors. The Helldivers, with support of fresh SEAF recruits, would successfully eliminate the Terminid icon.png Terminid presence of these sectors. The SEAF Training Facility in Aesir Pass would fall during the course of this order.

Super Earth analysts identified a large Automaton icon.png Automaton Data Center, codenamed Database One, deep within Automaton territory in Wasat. Believing it would aid in filling the gaps within their military intelligence, Super Earth ordered its capture. The Helldivers would successfully carve a path through the Ymir Sector via Wezen and Vega Bay before capturing Database One in Wasat. Due to the data being protected by exceptionally robust encryption protocols, the vast trove of information would take months to fully parse. However, it was discovered that the Automatons had plans for a massive terraformation project in Cyberstan itself. Other decoded entries mentioned the impact of the Meridian Supercolony. Several keywords appeared many times throughout the database: Vessel 00, Nucleus, The Final Collective, and others, but no further details could be found.

Shortly after, Super Earth High Command received two urgent requests[32] for aid on planets occupied by Automatons. The first, from Vernen Wells, was a distress call from thousands of trapped civilians within the remains of Super Citizen Anne's Hospital for Very Sick Children. The second, from Marfark, described intel of a large deposit of explosives on the planet, which were the same explosives previously found on Choohe for development of the MD-17 Anti-Tank Mines. The Helldivers were tasked with choosing which planet to liberate, as only the first liberated planet was likely to be saved. They would choose to save the civilians in Vernen Wells, the majority of which - including all 4,311 very sick children - were alive. Marfark would not be liberated in time and deployment of the Anti-Tank mines would be, once again, delayed. The very sick children would then be sent to Super Citizen Mary's Hospital for Tragically Ill Youths; once there, in an act of gratitude, they would all sign MOD Form 11 "Intent to Enlist"[33]. Despite successfully liberating Vernen Wells over Marfark, the Major Order would be considered a failure due to the tasks asking for the liberation of both planets. In honor of saving the children over unlocking a new Stratagem, Arrowhead Game Studios would also make a monetary donation to Save the Children[34].

Terminid population levels remained at unmanageable levels, as such High Command ordered the liberation of the Draco Sector, Hellmire and Nivel 43. The Helldivers would be aided by the permanent deployment of Hive Breaker Drills, to be used to nuke underground Terminid nurseries on certain missions. They would be successful, but during deployment of the drills, abnormally high levels of interstellar spore emissions were observed from the Terminid planets being liberated.

A sudden Automaton push into the Xzar Sector, with the intent to re-activate their defunct factories, prompted Super Earth to order its defense. While the Helldivers would be successful into clearing the sector from Automaton presence, the entirety of the Trigon Sector fell into the bots' control. Efforts to dismantle or repurpose old Automaton factories were then redoubled.

Following the recent nuking of Terminid nurseries, the bugs would attempt to spread into the Falstaff and Jin Xi sectors. These regions had long been allocated by the Ministry of Expansion for long-term colonization and as such, the Helldivers were mobilized to its defense. After multiple spontaneous outbreaks, the Terminids would sucessfully be driven out of the Fallstaff sector and their presence in Jin Xi minimized.

Orbital Cannons, the newest Automaton defensive measure
Orbital Cannons, the newest Automaton defensive measure

The planet X-45 in the depths of the Ymir Sector was home to a a lost Advanced Weapons Lab from the First Galactic War. However, due to dangerously high radiation levels across the planet, it was abandoned and the ravages of time buried it beneath rubble. Current radiation measures put the planet back in safe levels and an excavation to recover plans for a powerful interplanetary battle station within immediately began. The Automaton icon.png Automaton Legion had become aware of the planet's importance and launched several attacks[35] to capture it and route the cut-off Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth forces within the sector. SEAF troops would begin amassing in Aesir Pass in preparation for a future push to reconnect to their cut-off forces, but the planet would fall to the Automatons, reducing the viability of the re-connection. The Helldivers successfully held against the onslaught of attacks on X-45 and the plans for the battle station were recovered, alongside a lost cache of MLS-4X Commando rocket launchers. Recruitment levels swelled SEAF ranks to targeted numbers, which led to the shut-down of the remaining SEAF Training Facilities on Heeth and Angel's Venture and their conversion into recreational campgrounds for the Democratic Youth Scouts.

In order to observe potential outcomes for the Terminid icon.png Terminids' evolutionary response to duress, the Ministry of Science would begin a Terminid Research Initiative. The Helldivers were tasked with the slaying of 100 million bugs to aid in this endeavor. Within hours the quota was met, and the the initiative yielded immediate results: one key ancillary finding was that Terminids produce higher quality E-710 when harvested under extreme duress. Alongside this, a new behavior was observed: construction of spore-producing towers, roughly the size of small skyscrapers. High Command considered this new development to pose no threat, but would closely monitor it.

The troops in the Ymir Sector remained isolated, and the Automatons expanded their territory through the Andromeda and Trigon sectors. Super Earth High Command devised a plan to reverse this situation: by severing the Automaton front in two, the cut-off bots would be throw into disarray and their defenses weakened, allowing for swift liberation of the cut-off planets. The Helldivers would successfully capture Matar Bay, Martale, Marfark and Aesir Pass, joining Super Earth's forces and dividing the Automatons'. The isolated planets' resistance was rendered null, for as long as they were disconnected from Cyberstan.

The following orders would immediately take advantage of the new situation. By pressing the advantage, The Helldivers liberated the planets of Charon Prime, Charbal-VII and Choepessa IV while the Automaton's resistance was rendered null.

Ministry of Science would request a second - much larger - research trial to aid the Terminid Research Initiative. Given the first phase's findings, 1 billion bugs were slated for extermination via various methods to determine which yielded the best E-710 production. High Command had authorized a rotating series of Stratagems for the duration of the trial. Thanks to their efforts, it was found that no clear method of termination proved to produce more E-710 than any other. Another finding was that rather than appearing randomly, Terminid mutations decreased in frequency as proximity to Super Earth increased. It was then concluded that genetic variants were perpetuating from deep within Terminid space. Over the course of this order, the isolated pocked of Automaton planets would re-estabilish their logistics and communications infrastructure, enabling renewed resistance.

Following their recovery from being split into two pockets, the Automatons devised a new means to stop the forces of Super Earth: the construction of several Orbital Cannons across their domain. This initial deployment of the cannons would target SEAF air forces, extending extraction times[36] due to pilot shortages. The Helldivers liberated Wasat, Vega Bay, Varylia 5 and Ustotu, but failure to liberate Wezen in time would lead to the orders' failure. The permanent addition of Orbital Cannons across the western front would remain a threat to the forces of Super Earth. The pilot shortages were replenished, and additional training limited further impacts to extraction times.

The Gloom's final state
The Gloom's final state

Following multiple successive failures to acquire material for the production of MD-17 Anti-Tank Mines, Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth High Command ordered an Efficacy Review of the currently available Mine Stratagems. If The Helldivers could eliminate 1.5 billion enemies the currently available explosives would be deemed sufficient; otherwise deployment of the Anti-Tank mines would be immediately prioritized to enhance Helldiver loadouts. After failing to meet the quota, funds previously set aside for schoolyard air quality improvement were diverted to finance immediate mass production and distribution of the Anti-Tank mines[37].

A sudden Terminid icon.png Terminid wave overran SEAF outer recon posts on the planet Socorro III. Initial reports included new Terminid variants present in the planet, but were dismissed by High Command as "likely exaggerations, products of less-than-elite training". Together with the bug incursion, an unusual interstellar phenomenon was detected in the vicinity of the planet: an interstellar Terminid spore cloud of unusual size and density. On High Command's orders, the Helldivers successfully killed millions of Terminids in Socorro III and liberated the planets of Esker and Bore Rock. Additionally, they confirmed the re-emergence of the Impaler - an old foe from the First Galactic War - as well as other new Terminid variations[38]. The interstelar spore cloud, now entitled as "The Gloom", continued to grow and spread through multiple systems and did not show any signs of stopping.

The isolated Automaton icon.png Automaton resistance in the Trigon Sector remained, but The Gloom's expansion and the outbreaks it caused could not be ignored. As such, High Command ordered[39] the defense of multiple planets against the Terminids while simultaneously liberating the final isolated Automaton planets: Vandalon IV and Troost. The cut-off bots were eliminated, citizens across the federation burned scrap metal in celebration. The Terminid outbreaks were also contained, The Gloom's expansion was slowed. However the cloud would continue to expand regardless; planets with the densest spore presence would become obscured from Galactic Maps as signals failed to pierce the cloud.

All vessels sent into the Gloom, both manned and unmanned, ceased radio contact within minutes. None would ever return. The threat posed by the cloud continued to grow. In an effort to better understand it, The Helldivers were ordered to gather samples in planets within the vicinity of the cloud. The Major Order would be aborted however, a large large batch of counterfeit samples[40] was detected, which significantly hindered scientific advances to combat the spread of the Gloom. Medals were still sent out to Helldivers who performed their duties, while those responsible for the counterfeits had their pet fish summarily executed.

While Super Earth's attention was turned towards The Gloom, the Automatons made a push that breached the Marspira Sector with the successful takeover of Curia. This threatened high-classification citizens in the Developed Worlds closer to Super Earth. In response the Helldivers were commanded to launch an assault to push the bots away from the heart of the Federation. They would be aided by a surplus deployment of Orbital Gas Strike Stratagems provided by the disgraced soldiers that submitted counterfeit samples, who were now working in Chemical Weapon facilities to repay their debt. The Helldivers successfully liberated Curia and defended against multiple Automaton attacks, guaranteeing the protection of the inner worlds.

The Gloom spore cloud continued to grow further with no signs of stopping. It now encompassed the entirety of the L'estrade and Mirin sectors and many other planets. With no clear scientific knowledge of the phenomenon due to the sabotage of the research efforts, Super Earth High Command would order a massive extermination of Terminids with high focus on their biggest unit: the Bile Titans. This, alongside orders to hold specific planets, was done in hopes of somehow arresting the growth of the spore cloud. The Helldivers would be successful in these assignments and The Gloom would halt its growth, but high spore density of the enveloped worlds fully obscured them from the Galactic Map.

Shortly after, the Ministry of Defense finalized preparations to augment Super Destroyers with the capability to fire Orbital Napalm Barrages. However a polystyrene and scrap metal shortages caused production of the ordnance to come to a halt. Luckily, a large Automaton repository of unexpanded polystyrene was detected on Vernen Wells, near the ruins of the destroyed SEAF base. The Helldivers were tasked with liberating the planet, while decommissioning millions of Automaton units in order to rectify the resource shortages. Vernen Wells would be liberated, but failure to meet the kill quota would result in failure of the Major Order and thus production of the new Stratagem was delayed.

A massive Terminid icon.png Terminid outbreak erupted out of The Gloom and began invading the Jin Xi Sector from all sides, including the Sten Sector. Scientists began speculating that The Gloom increased Terminid reproduction rates within and resulted in higher outward spread, despite the cloud having ceased its growth. The Helldivers would be aided by a temporary deployment of the Orbital Napalm Barrage and successfully stave off the sudden outbreaks in full. Colonists evacuated during the attacks would begin resettlement soon after.

Another push was made by the Automaton icon.png Automaton Legion; intercepted communications revealed their goal was the capture of a large repository of titanium on Imber for construction of some kind of enhanced strike force. While the Helldivers would be successful in halting their push and preventing the capture of Imber, the Automatons would secure a foothold into the Tanis and Talus sectors. Decrypted intel indicated that the bots would continue to pursue the construction of the limited-use strike force, despite the lack of titanium.

Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth would then turn its attention towards the growing Terminid population and order the killing of millions of bugs, with special focus on the their medium-sized units. Coincidentally, manufactories producing polystyrene foam - an important precursor to napalm - were found on Automaton territory on the planets of Tarsh and Mastia. Liberation of both would allow for immediate fleet-wise deployment of the Orbital Napalm Barrage. The Helldivers swiftly liberated these planets and distribution of the new Stratagem followed soon after[41]. With their efforts focused elsewhere, the Helldivers could not meet the kill quota, Terminid population remained unchecked. The additional cost required to control the growing bug population required work hours to be extended by 14% for all citizens of classification B and below.

Following recent adjustments to fleetwide capabilities[42], High Command ordered an evaluation of Helldiver Force Readiness. The Helldivers were tasked with liberating more planets than are lost throughout the course of the order. They would ultimately fail as an Automaton push claimed more territory in the Tanis and Talus sectors. Overall Force Readiness was assessed as "Moderately Ready".

Research of the plans recovered from the Advanced Weapons Lab in X-45 was concluded, construction of the Democracy Space Station (DSS) was ready to begin[43]. First, an orbital construction site was necessary. Only two planets were identified to have a large enough magnetospheres to support construction of such scale: Gaellivare and Clasa, both under Automaton control. The Helldivers were tasked with choosing which planet to liberate, with an emphasis on securing long-term defensibility as the DSS would be extremely vulnerable to attack while unfinished. After securing Gaellivare, work on the space station immediately began and the Governmental.svg DSS Logistics Hub was established on Tarsh. Construction of the DSS would require significant advancements in three key areas: zero-g materials science, FTL propulsion, and gigastructure staffing. Achieving these advancements would require establishment of several other infrastructure sites to support the ongoing work.

The DSS entered its first phase of construction, progress into the next phases would require significant breakthroughs, the first of which was the development of Alcubierre Warp Drives to transport it without astronomic E-710 consumption. In order to allow this research to go forward, the Helldivers liberated the planet of Turing from Terminid presence to establish the Science.svg Xenoentomology Center. The Center would prototype and develop new High-Efficiency Alcubierre Drives, capable of effectively transporting gigastructures like the DSS. Meanwhile, the Automatons would attempt to capture Mastia, which would result in the DSS construction site being cut-off from its Logistics Hub. Swift Helldiver action led to the capture of Shelt, dismantling the attack before it concluded.

The Jet Brigade emerges
The Jet Brigade emerges

Before construction of the Democracy Space Station (DSS) could proceed, the establishment of a Hammer.svg Deep Mantle Forge Complex was necessary. The forge, when finished, would utilize the extreme heat and pressure near a planet's core in order to create an extremely strong and ductile chromium-cobalt-nickel alloy. This new alloy would be able to withstand the acceleration of the immense DSS at warp speeds. On Claorell, atmospheric readings indicated that the Automaton icon.png Automaton Legion was engaged in deep-mantle mining within the planet. Seeking to deny the enemy asset, and repurpose the tunnels to accelerate construction of the Deep Mantle Forge, Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth High Command ordered the immediate liberation of Claorell. The Helldivers successfully flushed out the Automatons and construction of the forge began. However, troubling intel regarding the original purpose of the deep mantle mining was discovered. The bots were working a new alloy of their own: an exceptionally light metal, seemingly for armor plating.

The Automatons would not let Claorell go so easily. Multiple successive attacks to re-capture the planet followed immediately after, but the Helldivers staved-off the offensive and the Deep Mantle Forge Complex was finalized. With the forge complete, the DSS entered phase 2 of its construction. However grave tidings emerged: a data breach was discovered at the Governmental.svg DSS Logistics Hub on Tarsh. The Automatons had learned about the DSS project, but its location remained unknown to them.

Work on the High-Efficiency Alcubierre Drives continued in the Xenoentomology Center on Turing. However research was bottlenecked by the number of Terminid icon.png Terminid specimens available. Additionally, once online the DSS would drastically increase E-710 requirements. In order to rectify both problems, High Command would authorize the establishment of the Badge.svg Terminid Research Preserve on the planet Acamar IV. The preserve would allow swift access of Terminids specimens for research and in the future it could be expanded to also allow quick access to vast quantities of E-710. In order for the preserve to be built, a quarantine zone was established and maintained on all adjacent planets: Crimsica, Turing, Darius II, Pandion-XXIV and Gacrux. After its successful construction, a small part of the Preserve was allocated to the new "Tyranny Park", where citizens could observe Terminids in their natural environment. Construction of the DSS would then continue on-schedule.

Automaton warships appeared in massive numbers in the atmosphere of Matar Bay. Multiple SEAF bases had fallen. Intel indicated this invasion was spearhead by a new augmented Automaton detachment utilizing jetpack technology: the Automaton icon.pngJet Brigade Icon.png Jet Brigade[44]. This invasion was a brute-force attempt to discover the location of the DSS or its related substations. The size of this assault was unprecedented and some loss of territory was deemed unavoidable. Matar Bay and Martale would both fall before the Jet Brigade was finally stopped in Marfark by the concentrated efforts of the Helldivers.

The surprise attack of the Jet Brigade highlighted the vulnerability of the DSS construction site. To rectify this, High Command ordered the creation of a defensive buffer by capturing Lesath. However, a sudden Terminid outbreak erupted in Gacrux and Pandion-XXIV, threatening the Terminid Research Preserve's quarantine zone. With Liberty Day fast approaching, time allowed only one of the situations to be addressed. The Helldivers liberated Lesath, safeguarding the in-progress DSS. The Preserve's quarantine zone would be compromised as Gacrux and Pandion-XXIV fell, putting local wardens in high alert in case of external attacks. With the extra safety provided by the defensive buffer, the DSS entered its third and final construction phase.

Liberty Day arrived. In this day of celebration for the Super Earth Federation[45], the Helldivers were ordered to "Cherish Liberty, with all your heart". Upon completion of the festivities, Helldivers would find a set of armor and a weapon delivered to their Super Destroyers[46].

With celebrations concluded, several strategic priorities had appeared: a high-security database, thought to contain key intel regarding the Jet Brigade, was identified on Matar Bay; the security breach of the Terminid Research Preserve's quarantine zone had placed it in high risk; and an Automaton territorial expansion was expected. High Command ordered the Helldivers to adress all 3 situations. They would ultimately fail at re-securing the Preserve's quarantine zone, but successfully limit Automaton expansion into the Gellert Sector and liberate Matar Bay. Intel from the database revealed the location of the Jet Brigade's staging ground, but most worryingly that the brigade was swiftly recovering from their recent failure. Security was doubled at the Preserve, with teams deployed to sweep for interstellar spore landings.

The finalized Democracy Space Station
The finalized Democracy Space Station

In order to finalize the Democracy Space Station, staffing needed to be secured. Over 1.3 million workers would be necessary to operate the space station. To resolve this, the Ministry of Humanity authorized the relocation of an unprecedented number of colonists[47]. Those affected by recent Terminid icon.png Terminid attacks along The Gloom's border were chosen to be relocated to staff the DSS. The Helldivers held the planets of Terrek, Cirrus and Angel's Venture while holding off against multiple Terminid attacks as citizens evacuated. With the DSS now fully staffed, construction was finished and the project entered its final phase: activation. All that remained was filling its 20-story reusable fuel tanks and inputting the highly-confidential activation codes.

With construction finalized, the Democracy Space Station only needed procurement of enough E-710 to power its state-of-the-art High-Efficiency Alcubierre Drives[48]. The rebuilt Automaton icon.pngJet Brigade Icon.png Jet Brigade was spotted on Vernen Wells, amassing their strength in preparation for an assault on the Governmental.svg DSS Logistics Hub on Tarsh. Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth would order the Helldivers to secure the needed E-710 while holding Gaellivare, the planet where the DSS awaited its activation. The Jet Brigade destroyed the DSS Logistics Hub, acquiring the exact coordinates of the space station in the process. Catastrophe would strike on the eastern front, as the Badge.svg Terminid Research Preserve suffered a catastrophic security breach. A massive subterranean hive erupted underneath Tyranny Park, massacring visitors and staff. The outbreak would spread to all planets surrounding the preserve in Acamar IV, including Turing and its Science.svg Xenoentomology Center. While the center would be defended, all other planets fell. Following this, the Jet Brigade captured Mastia, and would soon strike the DSS in Gaellivare. But before this could happen, enough E-710 was acquired and the space station was activated. Helldivers would immediately be able to dictate its movements and utilize its weaponry. The Jet Brigade began its assault on Gaellivare. What followed was an unparalleled display of undeniable "tactical brilliance"[49] by the Helldivers; they executed a series of moves with the DSS and its Tactical Actions that would ultimately result in Gaellivare holding its defense past the designated Major Order timer.

High Command would then immediately order the utilization of the DSS to liberate more planets than are lost throughout the designated timeframe. With the liberation of Gaellivare, the Jet Brigade found itself trapped on Imber - unable to escape - and were swiftly dismantled by the Helldivers. On the Terminid front, Crimsica and Gar Haren were liberated with the aid of the DSS. The Major Order was a success, proving that the Democracy Space Station was an important weapon in Super Earth's arsenal.

The Ministry of Defense began a Machine Gun Efficacy Review and requested the Helldivers' assistance. They were ordered to eliminate millions of Terminids with their choice of machine gun weaponry: M-105 Stalwart, MG-43 Machine Gun or MG-206 Heavy Machine Gun. The first weapon to reach its quota would be deemed most efficacious and Helldiver-approved machine gun. The MG-43 Machine Gun was the first to reach its quota. Assembly workers responsible for its manufacture were granted a free lunch hour and automatically-approved overtime, in order to create a surplus of this weaponry.

Although the Automaton Jet Brigade had been routed a second time, their production facilities remained active. Decryption of the database intel recovered from Matar Bay revealed that the Jet Brigade used Choohe as a staging ground. Super Earth High Command then mobilized the Helldivers to liberate the planet, while also dismantling millions of bots in hopes of recovering important data stored on their internal drives. Despite the kill quota being quickly met, Choohe proved too entrenched in Automaton territory to be captured in time. An impressive number of memory drives were recovered from the dismantled Automatons. They were uploaded to bot husks in SEAF possession and thoroughly interrogated for any intel regarding the Jet Brigade. High Command would send a dispatch during the order to address reported anomalies surrounding the Orb.svg Meridian Black Hole. It was determined that the singularity was a regular black hole; any reported anomalies were to be disregarded, as the science was conclusive.

The Illuminate return
The Illuminate return

A sudden uptick of colonial labor shortage caused a resource shortfall, interrupting production of the new MD-8 Gas Mines. The Ministry of Expansion identified several planets with easily-acessible salt deposits, which could then be rapidly mined and turned into chlorine for production of the new Stratagem. The capture of these planets was entrusted to The Helldivers, who would successfully secure Esker and Mintoria, but failed to liberate Blistica in time. Production of the Gas Mines was delayed. Following the order, investigations on the recent disappearances concluded. The cause was attributed to a small epidemic of navigational errors while hiking. New land navigation training was then made available to address it.

The Ministry of Defense awarded a multitrillion-Supercredit contract to AM Defense to expand production of high-quality military equipment for the Helldivers. As such a multi-complex Hammer.svg Factory Hub started construction on Achernar Secundus. Temperature readings showed an increase of Terminid icon.png Terminid activity in the Jin Xi and Sten sectors. High Command ordered the Helldivers to defend the contractor's investment from the bugs. This Major Order would very quickly be aborted; the Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth Federation faced an immediate threat as all units were sent into LIBCON 1.

Absent for over 100 years and thought eradicated, Illuminate icon.png The Illuminate had returned. The planet of Calypso was invaded by their forces with a strength never seen before in the Galactic War. Simultaneously, the Democracy Space Station was taken offline after multiple catastrophic system failures. Sabotage was suspected. The station was locked down for repairs, with personal being submitted to security screenings. What followed was a fierce battle for the planet, but within the final hour the Helldivers finally prevailed. The invasion left the colonies of Calypso in ruins. Thousands remained unaccounted for. The presence of human-like combatants prompted immediate investigations. Super Earth assessed that the invaders were a small cell that survived eradication at the end of the First Galactic War.

Another colony, Genesis Prime, was invaded by the Illuminate. High Command ordered its immediate defense. However soon after, multiple other invasions would be detected all across the southern sectors. Despite the Helldivers failing to defend some of them, Illuminate forces left the planets soon after local defense forces failed. This pattern of Guerrilla Warfare would be a characteristic across their invasions. The Factory Hub in Achernar Secundus was finished, but it was quickly invaded by the Illuminate, threatening deployment of the FRV[50]. The hub was defended, and fleetwide distribution began immediately. After repelling 7 invasions, the Major Order was considered a success. During its course, novel electromagnetic phenomena were detected around the Orb.svg Meridian Black Hole. Experts began closely monitoring it since.

Astronomers reported fluctuations in the event horizon and electromagnetic flares surrounding the Meridian Singularity. The anomaly was created as a result of the Supercolony's collapse utilizing Dark Fluid, which was an exotic matter liberated from the Illuminate at the end of the First Galactic War. The appearance of these phenomena so soon after their return prompted High Command to order construction of a Science.svg Center of Science on Fenrir III to better understand the Singularity. The Helldivers cleared the planet and its surroundings from Terminid infestation to enable the Center's establishment. The results would be immediate, as top astrophysicists from the Ministry of Science discovered the anomaly was not a typical black hole. It was, in fact, the first observed instance of a wormhole: a tunnel in spacetime connecting two disparate points in space.

The Festival of Reckoning had arrived. During this 3-day festival, the Helldivers were authorized to utilize a surplus of extra weaponry on each day. At the start of the festival, permanent deployment of the StA-X3 W.A.S.P. Launcher was made fleetwide[51].

With festivities concluded, Super Earth turned its attention back to the emergent Illuminate threat. Their refusal to capture territory kept their intentions hidden. As such, the Helldivers were ordered to kill as many Voteless and integrants of the Illuminate species. This was done with the aim to make each invasion take a steep cost to the Squ'ith combatants and also yield intel on the creation of the zombified civilians. Following the order's success, specimens of Voteless and Illuminate both were delivered to the[Ministry of Science for further study. It was found that the Voteless' DNA was spliced with proteins found on Illuminate corpses. Their brains were also heavily damaged in areas associated with cognitive dissonance, revealing that the mutated civilians had been brainwashed in the process.

The new threat posed by the possibility of Illuminate icon.png Illuminate mind-control would prompt Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth's Government to unanimously vote to enact the Freedom & Readiness to Enable Effective Defense & Obstruction of Mind-Influence Act of 2184, or FREEDOM Act. This would empower the Ministry of Unity with new tools to keep citizens safe from external and internal threats. The FREEDOM act would also require construction of the Governmental.svg Center for Civilian Surveillance and Safety on Mastia, which was currently under control of the Automaton icon.png Automaton Legion, ensuring it to be free of traitors. The Helldivers successfully secured the planet and its connecting neighbors and construction of the center was completed.

A sharp increase in spore outflow from The Gloom was detected by the scientists in the Science.svg Xenoentomology Center on Turing. This sudden increase cascaded through all Terminid icon.png Terminid-occupied worlds, causing multiple outbreaks across the front. High Command ordered immediate containment. Despite the Helldivers' success in stopping the majority of outbreaks, the Terminids would gain footholds in the Umlaut, Orion and Farsight sectors.

The Democracy Space Station (DSS) returned to operational status. Investigations revealed that the systemwide breakdown was caused by multiple failures to follow safety protocols, which were attributed to Illuminate interference. During its maintenance period various system adjustments took place, most important of which was the overhauling of the engines to allow movement to occur 6 times as frequently. This was done to better respond to the Illuminate's invasions. Seeking to test the reactivated DSS against the squid threat, High Command ordered the defense of multiple threatened colonies. The Major Order would ultimately fail, but the DSS' new operational parameters remained in place.

Scientists in the Xenoentomology Center reported a major finding: Gloom-induced mutations could dramatically increase Element 710 yield. In lab conditions, some specimens yielded up to 10x more E-710 compared to the control group. The possible economic implications of this finding placed development of Gloom-resistant technology as a top-level priority. High Command ordered the collection of fresh - real - samples from Gloom-adjacent planets; counterfeit sample detection measures were strengthened to guarantee proper compliance with the order. The Helldivers would succeed, leading into many findings such as Extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic waves proving effective at penetrating dense Gloom. During the course of the order, Astronomical Monitoring Stations reported the appearance of multiple unexplained gravitational waves. The "Spacetime Fluctuations" were positively correlated with Illuminate activity. The Ministry of Defense, in collaboration with the Ministry of Science began tracking these fluctuations, displaying their activities in all Galactic Maps.

Intel from the Automaton icon.pngJet Brigade Icon.png Jet Brigade's Staging Ground on Choohe was finally deciphered, their factories located on Chort Bay. Super Earth Analysts projected the unit to already be partially rebuilt, thus High Command immediately mobilized the Helldivers. They successfully carved a path deep into Automaton territory and destroyed the Automaton icon.png Jet Brigade Factories. However, the absence of any jetpack-augmented units on the planet came as a surprise. The Jet Brigade itself was later located by the DSS in Menkent, plotting an attack on Lesath to cut off the extended SEAF forces in Chort Bay. However the station's Orbital Blockade would hold them there, allowing Lesath's defenses to be bolstered and their numbers thinned. Meanwhile, the Science.svg Center of Science on Fenrir III made a discovery on the recent fluctuations in spacetime. By simulating sudden localized Dark Energy loss, the Center was able to model spacetime fluctuations. Shortly after, increased gravitational disturbances made travel to the Orb.svg Meridian Wormhole unadvisable, making it off-limits for all.

Angel's Venture is annihilated by the Meridian Wormhole
Angel's Venture is annihilated by the Meridian Wormhole

Following the end of the Democracy Space Station's Orbital Blockade over Menkent, the Automaton icon.pngJet Brigade Icon.png Jet Brigade launched a powerful attack on Lesath, seeking to to cut off the extended SEAF forces stationed on Chort Bay. The Helldivers would successfully repel the Brigade by making further use of the DSS, completely halting their advance by defending Lesath with the Eagle Storm Tactical Action. Shortly after, the Ministry of Science confirmed that Illuminate icon.png The Illuminate were harvesting large amounts of Dark Energy during their invasions.

The Orb.svg Meridian Wormhole was moving. Dark Energy gathered by the Illuminate was somehow powering the Singularity's motion. Movement speed was correlated with the amount of Dark Energy the Illuminate gathered from the Galaxy, and its current course was at risk of reaching Angel's Venture. High Command immediately ordered the Helldivers to quash any squid invasion as quickly as possible, in hopes of denying any more Dark Energy from fueling the Wormhole's acceleration. However they would ultimately fail; the Singularity reached critical momentum. Angel's Venture was annihilated by the Meridian Wormhole; all that remained was a Orb.svg Fractured Planet in its place. Super Destroyer Galactic Maps were then updated to display the Wormhole's predicted trajectory and its ultimate destination: Super Earth itself. Following the catastrophe, the President of the Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth Federation announced a Galaxy-wide mourning period of 24 hours[52].

Terminid icon.png Terminids launched a sudden attack on the Science.svg Center of Science on Fenrir III. The Center was of vital importance to studying the Meridian Wormhole and the Dark Energy powering its movement, as such orders were issued for its defense. Scattered reports from Fenrir III described new Terminids with discoloration, increased intelligence, and drastic changes to hunting patterns. Information on them remained scarce as no SEAF units survived close encounters. This new variant group would be dubbed the Terminid icon.pngPredator Strain Icon.png Predator Strain[53]. The successful defense of the planet against the new Terminid strain would yield an unexpected positive discovery. The Gloom-mutated Terminid carcasses were a plentiful E-710 source, leading to a startling revelation: Center astrophysicists confirmed energy produced by E-710 matched all known properties of Dark Energy. Further E-710 research could lead into insights on how Dark Energy was moving the Meridian Wormhole.

Shortly after this new discovery, the Science.svg Xenoentomology Center on Turing released its first line of prototypes for Gloom-resistant equipment. Astrophysicists on Fenrir III were rapidly depleting their allocated E-710; however the Gloom, and the higher-yield Terminids within, provided an opportunity to quickly rectify this shortage. In an historical collaboration between the ministries of Expansion, Science and Defense, High Command ordered the first large-scale Gloom expedition[54] on Fori Prime. In interest of preserving the structural integrity of biological and/or geological materials, the DSS was not authorized to aid in this expedition. Shortly after the Helldivers' success on this expedition, the growing spore density on Fori Prime forced all Super Earth presence out of the planet. Due to this, research on the Meridian Wormhole was greatly accelerated.

The Automaton icon.png Automaton Legion launched an attack that breached into the Nanos Sector. Intercepted communications revealed their targets: the first was Duma Tyr, the site for development of the MD-8 Gas Mines, which neared completion after weeks of delays. The second was Julheim, where thousands of civilians laid trapped inside the ruins of Good Citizen Andrews' School for Moderately Feeble Young Adults. High Command declared that saving both was unlikely, the Helldivers were charged with choosing which planet to save. However a sudden and unexpected collapse in Automaton capabilities led to the turnaround of Bekvam III's defense, as well as the capture of Charon Prime within hours[55]. Intel indicated that the lapse was caused by a routine update to the Automatons' Operating System. The bots regained full fighting capacity shortly after. Because of this, both Duma Tyr and Julheim remained free of Automaton control. The new Mine Stratagem was distributed fleet-wide, and the Moderately Feeble Young Adults of Good Citizen Andrews' were evacuated.

Moradesh is annihilated by the Meridian Wormhole
Moradesh is annihilated by the Meridian Wormhole

Moradesh was next on the Orb.svg Meridian Wormhole's path. The planet once housed the Research Facility that weaponized the Dark Fluid that destroyed the Supercolony of Meridia. Trace amounts of Dark Fluid were discovered in the Facility's ventilation system; its study could lead into breakthroughs to better understand Illuminate icon.png The Illuminate's plans. Delaying the Wormhole's movement as much as possible was necessary to allow research to take place. Simultaneously, the Automaton icon.png Automatons launched an attack on the Hammer.svg Deep Mantle Forge Complex on Claorell. High Command left the The Helldivers in charge of choosing which situation to address, as time only allowed for focus on one[56]. Automaton forces would briefly occupy Claorell, but were ultimately routed. Intercepted messages shed light on the Automatons plans: they sought to replace the fallen Jet Brigade with a new kind of unit. Scientists on the Moradesh Research Facility were then evacuated, leaving their Dark Fluid experiments behind.

A breakthrough by the Science.svg Center of Science on Fenrir III was made. They had discovered that the the Illuminate were sending accumulated Dark Energy directly into the Singularity itself. Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth High Command then ordered the establishment of a military blockade surrounding the Meridian Wormhole. The Helldivers were assigned with collecting scrap metal and large amounts of E-710, both from the corpses of Super Earth's enemies, in order to construct and fuel this massive blockade fleet. Despite their failure, the blockade would still be partially built. Thousands of SEAF warships, transports, and refitted merchant vessels formed a network of ships surrounding the Singularity from all sides. However scrap metal deficiencies left large holes in the blockade's coverage. The partial blockade had already proved efficient, as Dark Energy accumulation rates slowed. Shortly after the end of the order, Moradesh was annihilated by the Meridian Wormhole, leaving behind a Orb.svg Fractured Planet. Then, the Ministry of Humanity ordered a 24-hour period of quiet reflection on the nature of vengeance[57].

The Center of Science, after significant research on Illuminate technology and E-710, proposed a new multi-stage plan to counteract the Wormhole's movement. Stage I was already done: the completion of a partial blockade surrounding the Singularity. Stage II was the construction of the Penrose Energy Siphon: a means by which to effect a large one-time reduction in Dark Energy Accumulation. The device would be constructed piecewise across the orbits of Achernar Secundus, Ursica XI, Fenrir III and Heeth. While Achernar Secundus and Fenrir III momentarily fell to Terminid icon.png Terminid control, the Helldivers successfully held all planets. The individual parts of the rocket were then sent to Ivis' orbit to be assembled. All that was left was a massive E-710 injection to power the Penrose and enact the Dark Energy reduction.

A large scale assault by the Automatons had begun, it was spearheaded by a new series of units using incendiary weaponry: the Automaton icon.pngIncineration Corps Icon.png Incineration Corps[58]. Multiple attacks were reported across the Ymir, Andromeda and Nanos sectors. However, the Penrose Energy Siphon awaited activation; every delay could make the difference on the preservation of Ivis from the Wormhole's path of destruction. High Command entrusted the Helldivers with choosing where to focus efforts: defending against the Automaton offensive; or activating the Penrose rocket. The Major Order resulted in failure as Automatons conquered the entirety of the Ymir Sector, large portions of the Andromeda and Nanos sectors, as well as breach into the Trigon Sector. Reports indicated the enemy's goal was to push towards the Severin Sector, where old industrial assets of the Automaton Vanguard laid dormant. The Penrose also remained on standby, as sufficient fuel could not be procured in time.

The delay caused by the Automaton offensive had costed precious time to slow the Meridian Wormhole. Citizens of Ivis prepared for planetary evacuation. Additional risk to personnel associated with heavy-infestation operations was deemed acceptable, thus High Command would order the immediate liberation of Bore Rock and Esker. The capture of these planets led to harvesting of enough E-710 for the Penrose Energy Siphon's activation, halving Dark Energy accumulation - and the Wormhole's velocity.

With the activation of the Penrose, it was now possible to slow down the Meridian Singularity enough to put Super Earth outside of its projected path. High Command then ordered a sustained and intense suppression of Illuminate Dark Energy accumulation efforts. Temporary deployment of the E/GL-21 Grenadier Battlement was authorized on all Illuminate-invaded worlds; should the order be successful, the Stratagem would be permanently made available for fleetwide requisition. The Helldivers successfully quashed the invasions, preventing further Dark Energy accumulation and putting Super Earth outside the Wormhole's projected path. The Grenadier Battlement was then distributed fleetwide, at great expense[59].

Multiple assaults across the Xzar and Trigon sectors were launched by the Automatons, spearheaded by the Incineration Corps. Preliminary analysis of troop movements indicated the likely target of the new offensive: Malevelon Creek. With its Memorial Day approaching, Super Earth High Command ordered all Helldivers to defend the Creek. The Democracy Space Station (DSS) played a pivotal role throughout this Major Order, as usage of its Heavy Ordinance Distribution Tactical Action enabled multiple Gambits to take place; eradicating the initial Incineration Corps deployments. However the offensive pressed on as new incendiary units emerged from the Valdis Sector and marched to the frontlines, attacking various planets across the Trigon, Andromeda and Nanos sectors. A successful SEAF counterattack allowed Vandalon IV to be defended within its last minutes, eliminating the local Incineration Corps deployment.
The Automatons dedicated massive resources to this offensive, as the rebuilt Automaton icon.png Jet Brigade Factories were discovered on Aurora Bay, together with a fresh unit of the Automaton icon.pngJet Brigade Icon.png Jet Brigade itself. The push would reach a conclusion on the planet Pöpli IX: the DSS and its Eagle Storm Tactical Action halted the advance of the Jet Brigade; the remaining Incineration Corps relocated from the Nanos Sector to their aid. With both special Automaton divisions present, cascading logistical disruptions and difficulties in cryo-good transport emerged; resources were strained by the presence of the Automaton fleets. Ultimately, during Malevelon Creek Memorial Day, both fleets were defeated. The Creek was safe. Additionally, as a result of the defeat of the combined units: Automaton resistance on the southern-western front collapsed, giving Helldivers the opportunity to reclaim several planets with no pushback.

Ivis is annihilated by the Meridian Wormhole
Ivis is annihilated by the Meridian Wormhole

Shortly after the conclusion of the previous Major Order, Ivis was annihilated by the Orb.svg Meridian Wormhole, leaving a Orb.svg Fractured Planet behind. The critical role played by the Democracy Space Station (DSS) at the defense of Pöpli IX made enhancing its capabilities a top priority. Engineers at the Hammer.svg Deep Mantle Forge Complex on Claorell finalized improvement designs, presenting two possible upgrades: The first, Exosuit Support Bay, would reduce Exosuit cooldown; construction required the liberation of the Automaton icon.png Automaton factories on Wezen. The second, Expanded Convocation Bay, would reduce Eagle Rearm time; construction required the liberation of Trandor, part of an agreement with Admiral Defense. High Command entrusted the choice to The Helldivers, who in the end liberated Wezen. The Exosuit Support Bay was then installed on the DSS[60], reducing cooldown for the relevant Stratagems.

Science.svg Center of Science astrophysicists on Fenrir III were almost ready to initiate the third and final stage of the plan to stop the Meridian Wormhole. However, further progress on the highly theoretical realm of Dark Energy manipulation required extremely high quantities of E-710 with which to experiment. As such a second expedition into The Gloom was authorized by Super Earth Icon.svg Super Earth High Command, this time on Nivel 43. With the expedition's success, the final phase of the plan had begun: construction of the galaxy's first Repulsive Gravity Field Generator, which was started on Pilen V. The generator was derived from captured Illuminate Dark Energy technology, and powered by massive quantities of E-710. Once activated, it would create Repulsive Gravity, stopping the Wormhole's movement.

Shortly after, a massive outbreak of mutated Terminid icon.png Terminid occurred. Multiple planets across the eastern front were under attack by the Terminid icon.pngPredator Strain Icon.png Predator Strain. A casual relationship between the recent expedition and this sudden attack was explored and conclusively ruled out by High Command. With orders to contain the outbreak issued, days of fighting ensued. Thanks to the DSS, multiple Gambits allowed the defense quota to be met and territorial loss to be limited a single planet: Esker.

Illuminate icon.png The Illuminate launched a sudden attack on both Fenrir III and Pilen V, threatening the Center of Science and the Repulsive Gravity Field Generator respectively. High Command ordered the defense of the key infrastructure, but also the elimination of large amounts of Voteless, in order to better understand their mind control mechanisms. The scientists on Fenrir III suffered great stress after multiple successive invasions; they were supplied with top-of-the-line treatments to maintain mental acumen and ongoing research. This reallocation had an impact on Helldiver operations, reducing their Stim capacity. While the order was successful, an Illuminate invasion caused Predator Strain specimens on the Science.svg Xenoentomology Center on Turing to break out of their containment, overrunning the planet.

The Repulsive Gravity Field Generator neared completion, all that remained was oceanic quantities of E-710 to power it and stop the Meridian Wormhole. The Helldivers were ordered with liberating Turing from its recent Terminid infestation, as well as thinning Illuminate forces by defending planets. Throughout the course of this order, multiple important assets were invaded by the squids: the Governmental.svg Center for Civilian Surveillance and Safety on Mastia, the Hammer.svg Factory Hub on Achernar Secundus, the Deep Mantle Forge Complex on Claorell and the Center of Science on Fenrir III. Tibit, where derelict factories from the Automaton Vanguard laid dormant, was also invaded; the rationale for this attack was unknown. The order resulted in failure, but with E-710 secured, the bold action to activate the Generator in its mostly-completed state was made. Projections indicated that the Meridian Wormhole came to a complete halt, and simultaneously, Illuminate presence completely vanished from the Galactic Map[61]. The device suffered a catastrophic implosion shortly after. With the apparent defeat of the Illuminate, Super Earth began preparations for a future "Singularity Party" on Widow's Harbor[62] to celebrate its victory.

Terminids and Automatons, taking advantage of the final Illuminate attacks weakening defenses, took the opportunity to capture important Super Earth planets, such as Achernar Secundus and the Factory Hub within. High Command immediately ordered the Helldivers to liberate the lost assets as well as protect those still within Super Earth control. Despite the Helldivers' "error-free tactical execution"[63], Claorell remained in Automaton hands, resulting in failure of the order. The Predator Strain also made great territorial gains as it infested the majority of the Orion Sector. High Command declared their enemies were overextending themselves, which would soon lead into strategic opportunity.
