Back by popular demand: the Impaler! This big guy from the original Helldivers creates some new challenges. No longer can you run from the bugs when the Impaler is around–big, imposing, and destructive, it demands to be dealt with.

— Playstation.Blog, Helldivers 2 Escalation of Freedom Update

The Impaler is a large Terminid. Impalers burrow their "head" of three bladed tentacles, causing them to emerge near Helldivers to impede and attack them.

Spawning

Impalers can be first found on Hard Difficulty Icon.pngHard as the Mission Target of the Eliminate Impaler mission.

Starting on Extreme Difficulty Icon.pngExtreme, Impalers can spawn from Bug Breaches and can be found patrolling the map on its own. Higher difficulties will increase how often they can spawn.

Starting on Super Helldive Difficulty Icon.pngSuper Helldive, Impalers can be found guarding mega Nests.

Behavior

When encountered outside of a Bug Breach, Impalers will usually remain still. Upon noticing Helldiver movement or sounds caused by them, they will turn to face where a Helldiver or the sound was. When in a combat or encountered in a Bug Breach, Impalers will often immediately burrow its "head," using its three tentacles to attack Helldivers in its line of sight. The tentacles can be damaged to force them to retract. After some time, losing sight of Helldivers, or upon death, Impalers will retract all of their tentacles.

When patrolling, Impalers will also stop moving to turn towards any nearby movement or sounds.

At close range, Impalers can use its frontal weight to crush anything in front of it.

* Parts with their HP listed as "Main" do not have their own individual health. All damage dealt to these parts is transferred to the enemy's Main health pool.
** Refer to armor values and enemy durability as defined in Damage.
*** The percentage of damage that is applied to the enemy's Main health pool. At 0 HP, the enemy dies. Unless the enemy has constitution, then it will bleedout and die.
**** ExDR means explosive damage resistance, this is a percentage between 0 and 100. If this value is 100%, the part is explosive immune, meaning explosives cannot damage it. Explosions will only directly damage Main health if it is internal.

Tactical Information

  • When the Impaler burrows its tentacles, it will expose its unarmored head, which is a weak point that Helldivers can take advantage of.
    • Impalers can be easily killed in this state, so locating them is essential in defeating them. Some of the best weapons to dispatch them in this state are support weapons with high durable damage and firepower such as the GR-8 Recoilless Rifle, AC-8 Autocannon, or offensive stratagems such as the Eagle 500kg Bomb, Eagle Strafing Run, Orbital Railcannon Strike, and Orbital Precision Strike . This can be hard to manage, as Helldivers will have to avoid their tentacles whilst entering the stratagem input, and will have to avoid being knocked over, as this will cause you to drop the stratagem ball on your position.
  • The Impaler has a unique interaction when destroying the head armor; it will destroy the right side torso armor exposing the inner flesh.
  • The Impaler's legs are covered in armor which can be broken, exposing the vulnerable flesh underneath. If an Impaler does not reveal its head, destroying a leg is the next best way to exterminate it.
    • High rpm weapons like the M-105 Stalwart and MG-43 Machine Gun can quickly incapacitate an Impaler by targeting their legs once the armor has been destroyed.
  • The Orbital Railcannon Strike can cause the Impaler to stumble, if not killing it, allowing Helldivers to dispatch of them before they can burrow their tentacles.
  • Flames are effective at forcing them to retreat their tentacles, and chipping away at their Health, allowing Helldivers to focus on larger threats.
  • Sentries can target their tentacles, which can force the Impaler to retract them.
  • Impalers are especially dangerous towards the M-102 Fast Reconnaissance Vehicle, EXO-45 Patriot or EXO-49 Emancipator Exosuits as their large frames have a hard time avoiding tentacles, and exosuits can easily be dismembered by their attacks.
  • If an Impaler nears a Sentry, particularly the A/MG-43 Machine Gun Sentry and the A/G-16 Gatling Sentry, as they can't penetrate the majority of its armor, it will rear up and crush the Sentry under its immense weight.
  • The G-6 Frag is effective against their exposed faces.
    • The G-16 Impact shares this effectiveness, as it can penetrate the Impaler's armor and will detonate on Impact instead of having a fuse.
    • Other Frag weapons like the R-36 Eruptor and the AC-8 Autocannon (set to flak) are effective against their exposed faces and underside.
